You Are a Cat (Well, Duh I Am)

You are very independent and reclusive. No one really understands you, and you like it that way!

You are quite clever and ingenious. You can get yourself out of any sticky situation.

You are confident and cool tempered. You know you have many advantages and resources to draw from.

No matter what life throws at you, things always seem to work out your way.
I've been listening to a lot of Alanis Morissette lately - when I'm alone, so as not to scare Lucia - and like, screaming along to it in my terrible soprano voice. Ha ha ha. But it feels really good. We discussed the legitimacy of "Oughta Know" and Hole as legitimizing female anger as an acceptable emotion. But singing along to Alanis Morissette really just calms me down - it's like singing in mantras - esp. "Jagged Little Pill." Although I've always also really liked "What Goes Around", too. I get the same thing from singing along to Audioslave, weirdly enough.

Doing peer reviews of other people's theses... is stressful. If anyone has any suggestions for getting through peer reviews, please let me know, because I feel like I've been trying to sum up this girl's thesis for the past 3 hours.

"Be A Man" - Hole

The only boy I understand: the one ashamed to be a man
Just rape the world because you can, that's what it takes to be a man
Knock her up, slap her hand, prove it to me, just be a man
I think I can, I think I can, I'm big enough to be a man
Tell you the truth, I'm jealous yeah, give anything to be a man...
Be a man, so impotent, be a man
Take off your dress, your master plan, give anything, just be a man
Oh cut it off, of course you can, got what it takes to be a man
Oh rape us all just 'cause you can, well give it up, just be a man
Your fucking war, the carnage yeah, give anything to be a man
Cut it off, I know you can, 'cause no one cares if you're a man
Be a man, so impotent, be a man
Can't get it up? I understand... under the gun to be a man...
I think I can, I think I can, I'm big enough to be a man!
I fuck the world, because I can, I'm everything, oh be a man
I fuck the world, because I can, give anything, be a man
I'm potent yeah!!!

The Classic Dames Test
Your Score: Katharine Hepburn
You scored 21% grit, 9% wit, 47% flair, and 28% class!
You are the fabulously quirky and independent woman of character. You go your own way, follow your own drummer, take your own lead. You stand head and shoulders next to your partner, but you are perfectly willing and able to stand alone. Others might be more classically beautiful or conventionally woman-like, but you possess a more fundamental common sense and off-kilter charm, making interesting men fall at your feet. You can pick them up or leave them there as you see fit. You share the screen with the likes of Spencer Tracy and Cary Grant, thinking men who like strong women.

WTF, I have flair?  I'm actually not into Katharine Hepburn, but the picture reminded me of a Kate Moss one:

So, mixed feelings about I Am Legend.  There were some nice ideas.  The post-human New York was nice; I see "zombies" have now established (romantic?) relationships, a hierarchy, and trap-learning capacities.  But this was Hollywood does 28 Days Later, and Boyle's version is better.  From the poor lovable German shepherd to the God-fearing Red Cross woman, this was trademark Hollywood with rubber-stamped emotion.  Not even getting into the problems with the cinematography (if your zombies look like Diablo monsters when you see them in good light... first, fire your special effects company, and second, never show them) and plot (save for the almost cute development of zombie boyfriends/girlfriends - and not of the absolutely hilarious Return of the Living Dead 3 variety)...

Will Smith's a good actor.  But this had the philosophical depth of Men in Black, without the funny bits.  Only Hollywood can make a movie about the last man on Earth and have the extent of his mental development be: 1. I have no hope!  Life sucks!  to  2. omg God still loves me.

My poor mother brought up a good point though: what happened to the internet?  We post-apocalyptics are obsessed with the HAM radio and repeated broadcast signals crossing oceans, but that was a Cold War-inspired trend.  Maybe we need an update?

edit:  The Signal's getting a wide release in February just in time for Valentine's, and the trailer does justice!  Everybody see it for some superior post-apocalyptica.  Peace.

Strange, possibly racially-demeaning quiz here.  No, I'm not Native American. I wish I was though. I know the reservations are supposedly horrible places to grow up - although the ones I've driven through are gorgeous and highly preferable to the white-fella land that surrounds it - but I can't help it.  I love Native American mythology, history.  When my mother and I take our road trips around the northern midwest we basically structure it around Native American historical sites.  Pipestones (SD) and the Buffalo Jump (WY) are especially good.  So is Bear Mountain (Devil's Tower) (WY).  Crap I love Wyoming, and western South Dakota.

I really need to stop manifesting pain when I'm stressed out. I hope it'll get better after that exam on Thursday. I hope it'll get better after I fly home. Because this is really uncool, especially if I want to go to graduate school.

What reality television show is right for you? (choice of 4)  It has nothing to do with interest, because all are relatively successful reality television shows, which means there's enough of an audience of each to imply that interest has nothing to do with a show's audience.  I can also attest that interest in the subject is irrelevant from personal experience.  Note: not included are shows that have no "winner", such as the MTV and VH1 shows (The Real World, The Osbornes, etc.).

1.  What's most important in determining the "winner" of a reality TV show?
    a.  Talent
    b.  Morals

    a.  Flamboyant and opinionated
    b.  Unbiased and quiet
    c.  Supportive and honest
    d.  Hyper and pushy
3.  Who should determine the winner?
    a.  Competent experts in the field
    b.  The contestants' peers
    c.  The public - whoever's most loved wins
    d.  Everyone and anyone - it's all about surprises!
4.  Do you like hearing about drama between contestants?
    a.  Yes, it's funny
    b.  Yes, I love studying interpersonal relations and power dynamics
    c.  No, that's not the point
    d.  No, I prefer when everybody gets along
5.  What kind of contestants would you prefer to see?
    a.  Ambitious, creative artisans
    b.  Regular people
    c.  Inspirational, attractive heartthrobs
    d.  Nice people
6.  Should reality TV be a launching point for a career?
    a.  Ideally, yes, but what happens, happens
    b.  No - it's just an experiment
    c.  Absolutely, it's a must
    d.  No - it's just entertainment
7.  How much hardship should the contestants face?
    a.  They should be pressured, but not subjected to hardship
    b.  A lot, the more the better
    c.  A little bit
    d.  None - cruelty isn't fun
8.  How important are celebrities to a reality TV show?
    a.  Experts are important - if they're famous, so be it
    b.  Not at all, what's real about celebrities?
    c.  Important - after all, we all like stars
    d.  The occasional guest appearance is fine
9.  How much time are you willing to devote to watching a reality TV show?
    a.  Half an hour, maybe one - it better be snappy
    b.  One or two hours - it takes time to see all the complexities developing
    c.  As long as they keep me entertained, I could go for two or three hours
    d.  My time is worthless, so a lot of time
10.  Do studio audiences annoy you?
    a.  Yes, if they're not clapping respectfully
    b.  Yes, which is why they should not exist
    c.  No - I'm in the studio audience most of the time, screaming and holding signs!
    d.  No - they're nice to everybody, and they humor the bad jokes the hosts make
