I now know how bad FUNimation's mutilation truly was (although they did manage to sneak in some humor where it didn't exist in the original, it can't compensate for the dumbed down, TV-Y7 version they offered America). 

My only complaint about the Japanese version?  No Sean Schemmel.  Srsly.  Masako Nozawa = No.  What is this, Naruto? 

All in all, though, the uncut original is far superior.  The music isn't retarded, the dialogue is actually engaging, episodes are stitched together coherently (to the point of reeling in wayward former fans), characters swear and strut and are generally more interesting and realistic, and that one guy was decapitated.  And there's blood, buckets of it.  Plus the dream sequence of Embodiment of Fire is the same, though the episode title is different, which is really all I wanted anyway.  So thank you, Lindsey!  :D

* - Pic not related.  Except in that if I were FOX, I would hire Ben Stiller to direct the LAM.  Instead of that dumb ass who hired a music composer who thinks the overall tone is "a combination of Transformers and Harry Potter".  There had better be some fucking blood is all I have to say about that upcoming disaster.

I met Sean Schemmel accidentally once. XD He was good natured, but sort of stupid. WEIRD AMIRIGHT.

That said, though, I really really prefer Masako Nozawa - although I prefer Bulma's English VA to her JP. And I'm torn on ChiChi - on one hand, I always hear her in my head with the English voice, but I also really like her JP voice actor (and the dialogue itself is much better in Japanese, which probably helps). But Goku and his stupidly high girly voice? Comedy gold. Always. I can't picture it any other way. Schemmel - I hear him and go, "Geez! It's too manly!"

Comedy gold, yeah, I'd agree on that point. Which one did you hear first, though? It may be that if I only ever watched this version I'd be okay with it (after like 12 episodes I was starting to get used to it... starting...), but I don't know. I just hate that Vegeta got the only good voice. Weirdly I actually like some of the villains' voices in the English dub more, I think precisely for the comedy gold reason. They're all way too manly in the JP.

It was crazy. I was hosting an anime art gallery some friends and I had set up, and he walks in, all, "hey, is there any, like, DBZ?" and I said no, but I really liked the series, why, and he's all, "Yeah, I'm the VA for Goku." And then we talked. >__>

I saw the dub ... hmm. I saw the dub first, because I knew the show by the time I was watching it in Japanese, but it's probably true that I've seen a good 80 percent of the show in Japanese, and only about 30 percent in English. I don't think Schemmel does a bad job, I just... Nozawa, she's just such a good voice actor, and I think it suits Goku (and Gohan, and Goten) so well to have such a weird voice. XD;

Oh, the villains were definitely cooler + cheese, in general. Buu is one glaring (shining?) example - the silly childish voice is so much better than the super-deep Japanese one. And - uh, Zarbon. He's better in English, too. And about half of the Ginyu Force (except for the one with the weird accent). Hmm. *is thinking this out*

Yeah, I guess my personal feelings interfere on that one, no matter how good of a stylistic choice it is... sigh.

Oh wow, Buu has a super-deep voice? That's... wrong. I was just watching the Ginyu Force episodes and noticing how Jeice (sp? He starts out as Jackson in the subtitles, which I found hilarious) no longer sounded like Eurotrash, and I was so disappointed. That and Frieza was no longer an old woman. They all sounded like generic bad guys, and it made me think I was watching Akira, which I always watch in Japanese but has no really distinctive voice actors.

Buu's voice is - man, it's weird. I can't get behind it. Very low, deep, a bit hoarse. The English voice can be a little over the top and annoying, but it suits him better, too.

Freeza is so much better/scarier in the Japanese version, what. But I wonder how much of it has to do with - language fluency? Or rather, understanding what's being said, the tone of it, you know? Like, "he speaks in this and that accent." "She uses this type of language." Although I shouldn't presume. XD But with Freeza, it's like, he's so CALM and so POLITE and so FORMAL as he brutally kills people. It's creepy. (If you ask me, his Japanese voice isn't that much different from his English - just the US version couldn't rely on formal sentence structure and polite wording, since English doesn't have as much of that, so they just made him sound more feminine to try and go for the same idea?) I-I DON'T KNOW.

Vegeta's voice, by the way, is WEIRD in English, IMO. It's not a bad voice, it's just... raspy. It doesn't sound right for a guy as haughty as him?

Oh, yeah, he's definitely scarier in the Japanese version. But I'm used to laughing at him more than being scared of him, esp. because of his appearance, and maybe also because that defuses some of the extreme-killing-ness of his personality. You may be right, however, regarding the formality and femininity.

I think Vegeta sounds too cool in the Japanese version. Like a bad-ass anti-hero. Which of course he is, but he already knows that. I kove how skeezy he sounds in the English version, almost like a little gremlin (before the voice change in the later sagas, where he starts sounding too cool again because he's with the good guys and the fangirls, they luv him).

I just think like, for a guy as prideful and like - PRINCE OF THE FUCKING SAIYANS - a raspy little voice, while hilarious, is just... off putting. Somehow. XD

I think - now that I *am* thinking about it - that a lot of the reasons I prefer Japanese voice actors in DBZ to American is in the language and meaning, not so much the actual voices. I like Goku and ChiChi and their thick hick dialects - I like ChiChi's weirdly inappropriate-but-not feminine overtones. I like Freeza (and Trunks) and the super formal language that goes with. I like that Gohan age five uses super masculine pronouns. In those respects, I couldn't care less about the actual *voices*, which does make me wonder a bit as to my motives in saying "Oh, I prefer the Japanese track." XD

The hick dialects! I always used to read that in fanfiction, and I was like, where did THAT come from? Because it seemed so out of left field, although it definitely seemed to fit given they're country bumpkins. And the English version's dialogue is often just so uncreative that there's no room for that kind of linguistic personality. Now I can actually tell who's saying something just by how they say it, and there's a lot to be said for that.

Chi-Chi's is much easier to pick up on just by listening, because her grammar is weird but her pronunciation is perfect, but I used to have a lot of trouble understanding a word out of Goku's mouth, because his pronunciation is just like - "what? WHAT?" Son Goku, strongest person in the universe, voiced like a girly hick. HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG.

The VIZ manga does make a pretty good effort at showing off the character's accents - Goku uses a lot of weird abbreviations, which is hard to read but then again, accurate, and of course they appear to have a lot of fun with Chi-Chi... actually, I really like reading the manga, just because the translation is accurate and they do a good job with keeping the feel of the Japanese speech patterns intact - as best you can with a neutral language like English. (No feminine speech, really - no real formal language that doesn't also sound stilted, etc.)

I like reading the manga too - just because I think it's really well-drawn (more than people give it credit for), the dialogue is great, and it's just... much more intense than the anime. I'd stick to it exclusively if it weren't so much fun to actually watch the pictures move. Oh yeah, and if I had the nerve to buy it. -_-

Not fluently, so don't get that idea. XD; I had about three and a half years of lessons? It was a while ago, so I forgot a lot, but I can poke my way through most reading (I'm bad at speaking but better at understanding - but not near fluently by a loooong shot).

My Japanese teacher - I actually used to watch DBZ/GT raw on the International Channel to practice my understanding. Like - picking out words and sentence structure. Likewise, I was given manga by my teacher to practice reading (it's actually a very good way to learn, since manga is made intentionally easy to understand/read).

I love the manga. Toriyama - I get why people might not like his art style, but there's no denying his *technical* skill. He's great and detail and linework and - and making girls that look like real girls, not fanservice shots. I love that even when he draws Bulma in a fanservicey manner, she has rounded legs and her stomach has curves and she has - you know, meat on her bones. And that she's considered to have a huge chest, yet is "only" a C-cup. REALISTIC PROPORTIONS. IMAGINE.
