I went to listen to this guy talk the other day.  He's cool.  And smart.  I approve.  Got started in the Peace Corps, but has made it this far.  He gives me faith in our diplomats [but as I've already heard, the State Department says things that other people in government don't want to hear].

I also want his job.

I love Evita, more and more and more.

show business kept us all alive since 17 october 1945
but the star has gone, the glamour's worn thin, that's a pretty bad state for a state to be in
instead of government we had a stage, instead of ideas a prima donna's rage
instead of help we were given a crowd, she didn't say much but she said it loud!

Is it possible nowadays to get that kind of job after the Peace Corps without a master's degree? Did he just work his way up in the State Dept.? And when'd he learn the languages (I assume it had something to do with being ambassador to the countries in which they were spoken, but did he like get a tutor or what?)?

Erm... well, he had a master's degree, but yeah, I think he worked his way up. The State Department has extremely extensive language training courses that you take prior to and during your assignment. I think they use a computer program and a class.

he didn't get his master's until much later, though. ah, okay, cool.

Oh, I see what you mean, he got the master's after being in there for a while. Maybe he got lucky? The Foreign Service is actually a very small "fleet" and I imagine if you make the right connections and do the job very well you can be moved up.

I was just wondering if you could do that today making the right connections and doing the job well, or if there's more competition or something such that a master's is more necessary than in the 70's

I've heard that it is possible, yeah, not to get a master's, but that more people do have a master's now in the job so... you should probably think about getting one.
