He was one of the very few "YA" authors whose books I liked as a middle-schooler.  Also some of the first sci-fi and fantasy I read.  Interstellar Pig was assigned by an English teacher in 7th grade.  I read several others (Blackbriar, I sort of remember).  The one that made the most impact on me, though, was The Beasties, because of the whole pro-"monsters" angle.  I should re-read it, in fact.

Apparently he died in Thailand

I only ever read House of Stairs (which I feel like we talked about? Or if it wasn't with you, it was with someone else who had complicated mixed feelings about it), but I was really impressed by it and remembered it way better than most other one-off books I read.

You know, I never read that one? I tended to pick out his more horror-ish books (as compared to his sci-fi stuff) - and in hindsight I think that was part of why he's stayed with me, because his books were the first horror I read that wasn't Goosebumps.

Not sure why I have a question mark at the end of that first sentence. That's cool.

That's too bad (I'm always late on these things).

I read Interstellar Pig because someone else said it was good and because it was in one of the classrooms in middle school.

Did you like Interstellar Pig? That was like my gateway book for him, and I liked it mostly because it was so creepy.
