So as I mentioned in the comments of my last post, I'm going to be living with multiple people no matter where I end up next year. Thus part of what I'm considering (in addition to rent, ease of access to public transportation/school/amenities, neighborhood, condition of the room/house) is compatibility with the people I'll be living with. So: anybody have any suggestions on questions to ask potential roommates? Serious questions ("are you ok with overnight guests?") and non-serious questions ("do you enjoy fava beans and a nice chianti with your liver?") all accepted.

*: Bonus points for anybody who gets the reference in the title.

Are you light sleepers?
How loud is music before it's too loud?
And tell them something about yourself, too. "I don't think I snore, sleepwalk, or do strange things in the night." Unless of course you do. ;-)

No bonus points for me, I'm afraid.

Re: bonus points - it's a reference to "Yo-Yo's Roomies," the title of a hilarious chapter of Catch-22 where Yossarian ends up with incredibly annoying/childish new roommates.

I shouldn't have missed that. Have to admit I was thinking along the lines a pop song by, perhaps, Lady Gaga. Though after getting to know you over the last year I should've thought it was a lit reference. *g*

A pop song! *so offended* Actually, that would have been a fair guess, I used to always use song lyrics as LJ post titles. But I don't know any roommate songs!

As you should be. ;-)

Anyway, hope everything works out with your new living arrangements. Keep us posted.

I'd probably try to find some way to ask about their preferences regarding music/noise/sleep times and see if it matches up with yours. If you're very relaxed about music listening and ambient noise and they expect things to be quiet at a certain time, then that might be a problem, and vice versa.

Questions about handling clean-up after cooking/eating are a good idea, too. It's not even so much exactly what they say as what you can tell about their attitudes based on how they reply. If they look at you blankly when you ask about cleaning up after cooking/eating, it means they never do it.

Are you laid back, or some kind of asshole?

Do you have any serious food allergies that would limit what we could prepare in the kitchen?

Have you ever lived with a roommate before?
