The first one is my favorite, followed by the second (because of the military-industrial imagery). The last one (and a lot of his salaryman stuff) is very "Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RU8slEG-OtM): "after years of waiting, nothing came/ I'm a reasonable man, get off my case."
Thanks for the YouTube link. I heard my first Radiohead song the other day, courtesy of an Amanda Palmer cover (Idioteque), and now I've heard my first song sung by the band itself.
I know I've linked you to "Fitter Happier" before. Seriously though, Radiohead has been my default favorite band since high school. Politically/socially opinionated, creepy, smart music. I'll have to link you to some of my favorites:
- "Paranoid Android" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF8khJ7P4Wg) (this is like the epic/legendary Radiohead song. It has three parts and is very manic lyrically) - "Lucky" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF8khJ7P4Wg) (I consider this "my song"... "the head of state has called for me by name, but I don't have time for him/ it's gonna be a glorious day!") - "Optimistic" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJkeVkYq8Es) (another legendary song IMO, about life, the universe, and everything) - "Backdrifts (Honeymoon Is Over)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNA6mJ7ppYk) (off their most political CD) - "Karma Police" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uYWYWPc9HU&ob=av2el) (an obligatory classic, the song that got me into Radiohead in middle school. My favorite part is the end, the "whew for a minute there, I lost myself")
Also, I think you might enjoy the video for "There There" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AQSLozK7aA&ob=av3el), and this fanmade video for "A Wolf At The Door" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvBPCm25z4I).
I love that those are all uploaded by someone with the username "Communistnihilist"
Listening to "Lucky" right now--that lyric you quoted made me want to hear it right away. I like it! "When I am king/ You will be first against the wall" Yess!
Haha, I was like, "ummm... that's Paranoid Android." My favorite line in that song is definitely "Kicking screaming Gucci little piggy," though! Enjoy!
Yes! It's a totally ironic-but-yet-not-ironic, flinging-it-all-away "glorious day." Plus remember the whole thing is set within the frame of "pull me out of the air crash," which reminds me of Fearless and of my general interest in plane crashes.
I just went into the other room and said to the ninja girl, "Hey, have you ever heard any Radiohead, because I'm just listening to some now, and I like it."
And she said yes, and she has two albums and will send songs. Familial music sharing for the win!
No, the video is cute! Haha. It reminds me of "The Owl and The Pussycat" actually, except for the whole turning-into-tree part. Anyway, that was the song/video that convinced me to actually buy Radiohead.
I think it's one of my favorites--though I have to say, they're all really good. I'm liking the beats and sounds on "Backdrifts" now (as you can see, I've moved to random-sampling mode).
(Radiohead, if they were reading this, would be rolling their eyes and saying, "um, thanks? For the 99 cents? Maybe you could buy a few MORE of them?" "Okay, okay, Radiohead. I will buy a few more.")
Radiohead did an experimental thing with their last CD, In Rainbows, where they let people download it for whatever price they wanted to pay (including $0). I am not as much a fan of In Rainbows as their other albums, but you could look up "All I Need" or "Reckoner" from that album and see if you like its style. It's very different.
I love the video that guy made for that song. It actually makes me sort of emotional.
