all gloss and grit
Jan. 21st, 2007 09:13 pmSome movies I'd like to see in theaters:
* 300 - subject matter is uninteresting to me (ancient Sparta fighting ancient Persia, *yawn*) but the cinematography looks amazing. Well, it's inspired by Frank Miller (Sin City)'s comic book, so what do you expect? Has that indescribable, half portrait-half digital look that you have to see to believe. Plus it seems to take liberties with surrealism, which is always refreshing. Besides, damn, I want a movie production of Ilium to look like this movie. I don't think this would be as good on video.
* Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - well duh, I mean I have to see it. Not that it looks particularly good or anything, but I remember really liking this book.
* Haven - I'm taking a gamble on this one. It's the ol' interconnected people becoming connected by violence thing that's very in for those well-respected edgy movie directors nowadays. This one's set in the West Indies (paradise), and the overall tone looks a little different just because of that.
Some movies I would be content renting:
* Breach - about the FBI and spies and stuff. Maybe I'm a virgin when it comes to FBI movies, but this one, with a Phillip Glass soundtrack, looks pretty good, or serious, or something. I'd only see it because of all the FBI stuff in my Musings of a Young World series. If you watch the trailer you'll see that Ryan Phillipe looks like he'd make a good Rod (a young, blonde, almost-too-cherubic Rod), Chris Cooper looks like a great Monty Shields, and Laura Linney actually gives Jodie Foster a run for her money when it comes to the part of Chadbourne. Well, it's a good trailer, what can I say.
* The Last Mimzy - weird mix of like... Shyamalan and Disney. Something about kids with psychic telekinetic powers? I don't know. But the little girl looks like such a Lily, and you know, depending on the reviews, maybe.
* Edmond - suburban guy goes into the "dark streets of the city" and goes psychotic, apparently. It looks slightly bad but possibly worth a watch, and I mean possibly. But the soundtrack sounded damn good, and if it plays like the soundtrack, then yes.
