I saw it less in gendered terms and more in general "artistic physical discipline makes you crazy" terms. It's not that I didn't see the body image factor involved (I was almost freaking out when Mila Kunis was eating the cheeseburger) but I also had some major flashbacks to The Wrestler which also had the "dying artist takes a fall" final scene. If you haven't seen that one, you should as Mickey Rourke tortures himself just as much as Natalie Portman does (although in The Wrestler you expect it to be a painful movie)
