Tough question! I definitely think people get bored with sequels that repeat the formula of the first movie - unless it's the kind of movie that promises only "the same no-holds-barred adrenaline thrill ride" like the Die Hards and Transformers of the world, in which case the critics get bored, but those who like it are happy because they get what they're paying for. Same goes for book sequels (or books by the same author... I'm thinking Jodi Picoult here).
Judging by the rabid reaction of Harry Potter/Twilight/LOTR fans, I do think people like very faithful movie adaptations of books. But of course, only if you've read the book. Some dead-on book-to-movie adaptations have probably failed in test screenings because the audience doesn't care about fidelity to the source and only sees a convoluted plot that doesn't make sense on screen.
