Just remembered this song recently, and today it came up in my "related videos" on YouTube. I first saw this video on MTV (yes, when MTV still played music videos) when I was in middle school. I really liked it - pretty unlike anything I'd heard before - but I couldn't find it anywhere else (I had limited resources... the internet was young... etc.), so I forgot it for a long while. It still found its way into my aesthetic, however (I particularly liked the title, "Evolution Revolution Love"). I finally came across Tricky again in college - via Massive Attack, most likely. Oddly, I didn't remember any of the face-peeling.
Then I was thinking, what other awesomely weird music videos formed my aesthetic, so to speak (I was the kid that watched the Top 20 Asia Hit List on MTV Asia every Saturday growing up, so I was very much of the video-killed-the-radio-star generation)? And this one immediately came to mind. I saw it for the first time in Bali while we were waiting for the "revolution" to boil over, and suffice it to say this video and song totally changed my life:
