Neb. Man Sentenced for Firing Crossbow at Neighbor.

A 49-year-old man was sentenced to two -to four years in prison for firing a crossbow after a dispute about the breed of a neighbor's dog last June. The neighbor said it was a pit bull; Carlos Lupercio said a labrador. Lupercio went home, returned with a crossbow pistol and fired at his neighbor, just missing.

How do I know that song?  It was on some album of weird oldies songs ("novelty songs", apparently) that Lindsey made me listen to on a field trip in middle school!  Along with "Kookie Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)" and "They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa!"  Was "Purple People Eater" on that album too?  Probably.  Amazing the things that stick with me.

Speaking of novelty songs... here's one I found out about thanks to wikipedia's list.  "The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun" by Julie Brown (come on, I had to click on something with that title).  It's pretty sweet:

I only recently began to appreciate music that was not contemporary, by the way.  Part of this was cuz my parents did not expose me to anything "oldie".  My dad introduced me to Andrew Lloyd Webber (flair for drama - same reason he liked to act out the climax of The Return of Martin Guerre), my mom introduced me to nothing (she kind of stopped listening to music after she got into Indonesia - like others in her generation, though, she liked Bob Dylan and the Talking Heads in college).  So liking things like "All Along the Watchtower" and "Sympathy for the Devil" is a big step for me - let alone The Mamas and The Papas and Joan Jett.

When my mom heard the new music I'd accumulated over spring break she made some comment like, "I see we've gone into the past," or something.  We have to remember that my mother was not in the U.S. in the '80s either.
