this is my mother. this is my mother's brain on db.
After prepping her with my high school fan fiction that's really become more than just fan fiction, and some heartfelt LJ posts, I got my mom to watch DB for the first time, ever. I would have sort of preferred that she see DBZ, because that's what hooked me, and it's a more accurate representation of what I really, honestly love about the franchise, all quality aside. But there was no internet at the Hilton in Boston except the kind you pay for, and I don't have any DBZ on DVD, so I had to be satisfied with showing off the end of the Piccolo Jr. Saga (the final fight at the world tournament).
So, here are her reactions:
* "I don't recall the Monkey King having girlfriends."
* "I'm not sure about Piccolo being evil."
* "Well, that was fairly incoherent."
* "That's cool how it's suddenly black and white, it really looks like it's drawn."
* "Why does Tien have three eyes?!"
* "That's not fair!" (after Piccolo rips off his injured arm and grows a new one)
* "This is just painful." (when Piccolo is making Goku's shoulder injury worse and worse by stepping on it)
* "Who's the old guy with the beard?"
* "Oops." (when Oolong gets hit in the face with a flying brick from Piccolo's power-up)
* shook her head in dismay when Tien didn't open the bottle containing Kami even while everyone's shouting at him to hurry up and do it
* clasped her hands together, smiled, and batted her eyelashes with big doe eyes, then said, "this is Chi-Chi."
* "Entertaining. I like the animation."
* "They're building suspense!" (when one episode is 90% Piccolo powering up)
Well, she sat through the whole fight. And she didn't seem dismayed. She's agreed to watch DBZ when I come home for the summer and make use of the wireless internet.
