Right, which is part of the reason I don't think Spielberg is a great director. I think he's really great at tapping into the hegemonic current and making a movie that just plays to it. So sometimes I like his movies and often times I don't. But he's never controversial, he never breaks new ground (except technically), and he never shifts anybody's paradigms. However he's extremely influential because he's very good at tapping into the hegemonic viewpoint, making loads of money, and getting rave reviews by the biggest, most mainstream critics. Then other movies see how successful he is and follow suit. That's all his influence is.
